You may think creating a mudroom for your home is an added chore and totally unnecessary but let us consider its benefits. It positively affects not just the members of your family but also your home and carpet cleaning.

A mud room is a rather informal part of the house. It is constructed for the benefit of the family members as a transition area from the outdoors and the dirt and mud one gets from there to the formal indoor area of the house. It is often attached to the secondary entrance of the home and not the front door. This secondary entrance is the entrance the family uses regularly and where most of the dirt from the outside passes. Having a mud room effectively cuts down on the amount of dirt that enters your house proper and definitely cuts down on the carpet cleaning you will need to do. Since the family will enter this room first each member can remove their dirty shoes and slip into flip flops for house use. This will drastically cut down the amount of dirt and stain that will find its way onto your carpet. Wet rain gear, umbrellas and coats can be hung here to avoid the flooring of the house being damaged. This means that on a rainy day instead of you worrying about how to keep the whole house from getting wet you’ll just have to worry about the mud room. Mud room floors are often done in tile ceramic or Vinyl flooring for easy cleaning.

A mud room is also great for teaching your family members organization. Setup specific areas in the mud room where they can store their shoes, slippers, coats, keys and other items they usually take with them. In doing this, family members will learn that everything has its own space or place and will not be asking you or someone else where their things are every 5 minutes.
